Asheville City Schools 2009-2010 teacher of the year, Rhonda Sizemore, receives $1,000 from HomeTrust Bank
|
Isaac Dickson elementary School teacher Rhonda Sizemore has been selected at the Asheville City Schools 2009-10 Teacher of the Year. Sizemore, who has worked in the City system for three years, was chosen from among the ten teachers of the year at the system’s individual schools. She and her competitors were honored at a banquet this evening at the Renaissance Asheville Hotel.
The selection committee used the following criteria: experience, continuing education, participation in school-based and community activities, innovative approaches to curriculum, an extensive portfolio and a twenty-minute interview. "Underachievement has a long lasting impact on the lives of students and society as a whole,” Sizemore wrote to the selection committee.” Through careful guidance by highly-qualified educators, students can develop the social, emotional and cognitive strategies that will enable them to be lifelong learners.” HomeTrust Bank joined Asheville City Schools to honor this year’s teachers of the year. "HomeTrust Bank is pleased to partner with Asheville City Schools in honoring and thanking our educators, commented Dana L. Stonestreet, President and Chief Operating Officer. "They make a difference each and every day guiding the young people of today to become our leaders of tomorrow.” HomeTrust Bank presented Ms. Sizemore with a $ 1,000 check. Asheville City Schools will award her a laptop computer, a professional development conference of her choice and tuition for enrollment in Leadership Asheville’s 2010-11 class. "We have an incredible group of teachers in Asheville City Schools,” said Superintendent Allen Johnson, "and that translates directly into steady improvements in academic achievement. The teacher of the year selection process simply validates and recognized the fact.” Asheville Preschool’s Christine Mau was selected as this year’s runner-up. She teaches students ages 3-5.
